Yet another tasty chutney / side dish for Idly / Dosa....Once small onions are peeled it can be done quickly
Ingredients

- Oil - 2 teaspoons
- Red chilly - 3 nos
- Hing - a pinch
- Small onions - 20 nos
- Tomato - 1 no
- Garlic - 2 pods (optional)
- Tamarind - small goseberry sized ball
Part 2 - During grinding
- Roasted gram dhal / Potukadalai - 2 tablespoons
- Coconut scrapings - little (optional)
- Salt - 1 teaspoon
Part 3 - Seasoning
- Oil - 1 teaspoon
- Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
- Urad dhall - 1/2 teaspoon
- Curry leaves - few
Method
Step 1 - Saute
- Heat oil in a small kadai. Put red chillies, spray hing and add garlic.Fry till the raw smell of the garlic disappears
- Add small onions and saute them till it becomes golden brown
- Put roughly chopped tomatoes and cook till it becomes soft
- Add tamarind and swirl it once.Switch off the stove and allow it to cool
Step 2 - Grinding
- Take the sauteed items in a mixer jar.Add potukadalai and coconut scrapings to it
- Grinding it without adding water and transfer it into a bowl
Step 3 - Seasoning
- Heat oil in a small iron ladle or kadai.Splutter mustard seeds, urad dhall and curry leaves
- Drop it into the chutney and mix well
Mmm...Love onion chutney...I like adding some fennel to the chutney gives a nice flavor
