Millets Green Pongal / சிறு தானியம் கீரை பொங்கல் / Millet Keerai Pongal

I have already posted a millet pongal recipe using thinnai / foxtail. Foxtail Millet Pongal.This recipe is slighly different and more healthy where in which we are going add greens.Please note
  • You can use any type of millet 
  • You can use any green variety 

Ingredients
Part 1 - Pressure cooker
  • Any millet - 1 cup
  • Moong dhal - 1/2 cup
  • Palak leaves / Amaranthus / Methi leaves - 1 cup (finely chopped)
  • Salt - 1 1/2 teaspoons
  • Hing - a pinch
  • Water - 4 cups

Part 2 - Seasoning
  • Ghee - 1 tablespoon or more
  • Pepper - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin sees / jeera - 1 teaspoon
  • Green chilly - 1 (slited)
  • Ginger - 1 small piece
  • Curry leaves - few
Method
Step -1 Dry roast and Pressure cooker
  • Dry roast millet in a simmer flame.Ensure raw smell goes off
  • Once done take it out and keep it aside
  • In the same kadai dry fry moong dhal till it emits nice aroma
  • Transfer to this to a vessel that fits inside a pressure cooker
  • Add green leaves, salt.Pour water to it and pressure cook for 3 whistles
  • In the same kadai (used for dry roasting) melt ghee and add crushed pepper, cumin seeds.I used mortar and pestle

  • Also saute ginger and curry leaves
  • Add cooked pongal to it and sprinkle very little water.Blend well

Hot Pongal is ready.Serve with Karunai Kizhangu Masiyal
