Yellow Pumpkin Thogayal

Easy to do side dish

Recipe Courtesy : My Grand Mother

Ingredients
  • Yellow Pumpkin -1/2 kg
  • Tamarind: - small lemon sized
  • Urad dhall- 4 tablespoons
  • Red Chillies - 2
  • Salt - as needed
  • Hing - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Coconut - 4 tablespoons or even more
Method
  • Peel pumkin's skin and take off the layer with seeds
  • First cut them into big pieces.Wash them well
  • Chop into small cubes
  • Pressure cook for 2 whistles.Do not add water.Yellow Pumpkin will release water on its own.Drain it and keep it aside.Cool the veggie
  • Soak tamarind ball in little water for about 10 minutes
  • In a pan heat oil.Add red chillies first and saute for a minute
  • Add urad dhall and fry till it becomes brown as seen in the picture below
  • Turn off the fire.Sprinkle hing and salt.Mix well.Let it cool
Mixie
  • First put the grated coconut in the mixer and  run the mixer
  • Now add the fried items along with tamarind and grind them
  • Finally add the cooked pumpkin and grind everything to a smooth paste.Do not add water while grinding
  • Take off the thogayal using spatula provided with the mixer
  • Use little water (drained from pumpkin during pressure cooking) while doing so
Healthy and delicious thogayal is ready


Mix with hot rice / serve it with pidi kozhakattati
