Besibelah Bhath for Beginners

The original besibelah bath recipe consists of frying and grinding of some raw ingredients to derive the masala. But here I made use of readily available masala powders in the market and hence it made my job easy

Ingredients

Section I
  • Raw Rice - 1 1/2 cups
  • Toor Dhall - 3/4 cup
  • Turmeric - a pinch
  • Oil - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Water - 6 cups
Section II
  • Oil - 3 tablespoons
  • Mustard - 1 teaspoon
  • Small Onions - 1 cup (peeled and cut)
  • Sambar Powder - 1 teaspoon
Section III
  • Tamrind extract - 1/2 cup
  • MTR Besibelah Bath Powder -  2 teaspoons
  • Coconut Powder - 1 1/2 teaspoons
  • Salt - 1 1/2 teaspoons
  • Hing - a pinch
Method
  • Wash rice and dhall well.Combine both of them together with the other ingredients mentioned in Section I and pressure cook for 5 whistles
  • In a separate kadai heat oil splutter with mustard seeds and then saute onions in it till translucent
  • Add sambar powder and pour in 1 cup of water.Allow it to boil for 5 minutes
  • Extract tamarind juice - soak lemon ball sized tamarind in 1/2 cup of warm water for 15 minutes and squeeze in tamarind juice and add some more water
  • Add tamarind extract to the cooked rice-dhall.Sprinkle hing.Add MTR Besibellah Bath powder, coconut powder and salt.Mix well and heat it in a low flame for 5 minutes
  • Combine fried onions and rice-dhall mix.Top it with ghee if required
