Oats Thinai Rava Vaangi Bhath / Oats and Foxtail Millet Rava Vaangi Bhath

"Vaangi Bhath" is another name for "Brinjal Rice".Here I tried making it with oats, thinnai rava (foxtail millet) and some more vegetables using freshly prepared masala powder.It came out well and hence blogging this recipe

Ingredients
Part 1 - Vaangi Bhath Masala Powder
  • White sesame seeds / White Ellu - 4 tablespoon
  • Cinnamon stick / Pattai - 1 small piece
  • Cardamom - 2
  • Cloves - 2
  • Red chillies - 3 or 4 nos
Part 2 - Dry Roasting
  • Oats - 1 cup
  • Thinai rava / Foxtail millet rava - 1 cup
Part 3 - Seasoning
  • Oil - 2 tablespoons
  • Mustard seeds - 1 teaspoon
  • Urad Dhal and Channa Dhal - 1/2 teaspoon each
  • Curry leaves - few
  • Garlic - 4 nos (finely chopped)
  • Green chilly - 2 or 3 (slited)
Part 4 - Saute
  • Small onions - 10 nos (finely chopped)
  • Capsicum - 1 (diced into small cubes)
  • Tomato - 1 (finely chopped)
  • Brinjal - 15 nos (finely chopped)


Part 5 -  Others
  • Water - 3 + 1 cups
  • Salt - 11/2 - 2 teaspoons
  • Turmeric powder - little
  • Coriander leaves - few
  • Lemon - 1
Method
Step 1 - Preparation of Masala Powder
  • Dry roast the ingredients given under "Part - 1"
  • Cool and powder it in a mixer.Keep it aside
Step 2 - Dry Roasting
  • Dry roast oats till it is hot to touch.Take it out and keep it aside
  • Also dry roast thinai rava till the raw smell goes.Take it out and keep it aside

Step 3 - Seasoning and Saute
  • Heat oil in the same kadai.Splutter mustard seeds.Fry channa and urad dhals in it
  • Saute garlic in it till the raw smell goes.Fry curry leaves and green chilly
  • Add small onions and saute it with a pinch of salt
  • Put tomatoes and fry it with a pinch of salt
  • Once done add capsicum pieces and saute it in high flame for few minutes
  • Put brinjal pieces and saute for some more time
  • Add turmeric, masala powder (prepared in step 1) and salt.Keep it closed and cook in medium flame
  • Open the lid once in every few minutes and stir the contents
Step 4 - Oats Thinai Rava Vaangi Bhath
  • When the moisture starts evaporating pour water and add coriander leaves in it
  • When the water starts boiling slowly sprinkle dry roasted thinai rava by stirring it continuously
  • Keep it closed for 5 minutes.Open the lid and stir it once in between
  • Once thinai rava is half way cooked add the roasted oats and mix it well
  • It will get cooked very quickly within 3 - 5 minutes
  • Once done switch off the stove and squeeze lemon.Mix it thoroughly. Garnish with coriander leaves before serving

Oats Thinai Rava Vaangi Bhath is ready.Serve hot with curd and chips (not for weight watchers)
