Vazhakkai Podi /Raw Banana Podi

This is a traditional South Indian Podi.Thetexture looks like Thogayal though.You can also see a similar post Raw Banana Podimas here

  • Raw Banana - 4 nos
  • Gingelly oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Hing - 1 pinch
  • Red chillies - 6 nos
  • Chnna dhal - 1/2 cup
  • Urad dhal - 1/2 cup
  • Salt - 1 teaspoon
  • Coconut -  2 spoons (if needed)

Step 1 - Heating Raw Banana
  • Brush raw bananas with oil and heat them directly on an open flame
  • Use phulka holder if needed
  • Turn and heat raw banana on all the sides
  • Do it till it blackens and the peel comes off
  • Cool and grate it

Step 2 - Preparation
  • Heat oil in a kadai.Sprinkle hing and fry red chillies
  • Put channa dhal and fry till it is golden brown
  • Now add Urad dhal and saute till it is golden brown
  • Switch off the stove and add grated raw banana
  • Put salt and mix well
  • Cool it

Step 3 - Vazhakkai Podi
  • Grind the above ingredients in a mixer.Do not add water
  • Put coconut if needed and grind once again

Vazhakkai Podi is ready.Mix with rice or serve it along with Idly Dosa
